Urgently help us to fix the extensive damages at VOSD!

Need Urgent Help for Rebuilding VOSD Sanctuary Damaged by Flooding and Torrential Rains

The VOSD Sanctuary and Hospital is faced with a crisis – our facility has had to face the wrath of the rain for the past few weeks. Rain that we haven’t seen in over TEN YEARS since we started VOSD Sanctuary.

Weather reports had predicted that Karnataka would see heavy thunderstorms in mid-October, so we were prepared and moved hundreds of our dogs to safer, higher parts of the sanctuary where there would be no chance of flooding.

However, the demonic rain has ravaged through the low-lying areas of our facility leaving extensive property damage. Lakhs of rupees worth of infrastructure including the main boundary of one side of the property of over 1000 feet has been destroyed, along with parts of our drainage system were uprooted/destroyed during the cyclone-like showers. This is the first time we were in a flood-like situation of unprecedented intensity.

On the bright side of this dark, ominous time, each and every dog and over 30 people who stay at the VOSD Sanctuary are SAFE AND HEALTHY.

The changing weather conditions have impacted us again severely this year and we urgently need to rebuild the damaged parts of the VOSD Sanctuary and strengthen our infrastructure.

VOSD is in the Driest Part of India

  • Karnataka as a whole is the second driest state in India after Rajasthan!
  • This is skewed by the fact that the Western Ghats in Karnataka are one of the wettest regions in India- it stands to reason that the rest of the state- north from Bangalore and east of the Western Ghats is drier than Rajasthan.
  • We are in this region 75 km north (for reasons of proximity to the vet infrastructure of Bangalore).
  • Water scarcity in this region is compounded by the fact that we are in a very hilly region made of granite rock. But over the past year with help of our kind donors and supporters, we have made VOSD Sanctuary self-sufficient with respect to water with excellent rainwater harvesting systems and over 16 lac litres of underground water storage.

The estimated cost breakup of re-building and construction at the VOSD Sanctuary to fix the damages and strengthen our infrastructure:

(1) For granite pillars section that completely collapsed in the continuous rain

  • BUILDING 1100 feet long wall with 4 feet deep concrete and rebar foundation topped with 12feet high steel beams with 1 layer of 1-inch rigid steel mesh and 1 layer of steel roofing sheet, topped by Constantine wire.
  • Cost of construction and labour at 2700 per feet, totalling 29.7 lacs.

(2) For a section of 12 feet high steel boundary that has partly bent outwards with the pressure of waterlogging inside the farm. This perimeter is now rendered useless because of gaps created in the steel wall.

  • Re-laying the foundation of 2000 feet boundary in 4 feet deep concrete – using the existing steel, sheeting etc above the foundation
  • cost of construction and labour at 1700 per feet, totalling 34 lacs

(3) Earth-works for contouring of existing land, making concrete gullies and raising the height with 150-200 tractor loads of material in the lower section of the sanctuary that gets flooded with the backpressure of water from the slightly higher govt. stormwater drains on the other side of the boundaries

  • Cost of construction and labour, totalling 10 lacs.

Total Estimated Cost of Repair & Construction: INR 73,70,000 (USD 98,152)

In the past, all of you have stood by us through:

  • A severe drought and water shortage.
  • The Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Several man-made catastrophes created by dog haters who wished to see the VOSD Sanctuary & Hospital shut down.

We once again turn to you – our dog lover family – to help us overcome this maddening monsoon and the destruction it has caused. We urge you to help us in this mammoth mission of restoration operations, by contributing any sum you can. Help VOSD get back on its feet and continue being the world-class sanctuary and hospital for India’s neglected and abused dogs.

VOSD Sanctuary and Hospital has the capacity and infrastructure to take care of 1400 dogs. Your kind donations will help us keep our door open for helpless dogs who cannot survive on the streets and cannot get adopted. These rescued dogs need compassion, medical care, rehabilitation, training, a loving home, and a place to live with dignity. VOSD is that home. Do support our work for India’s neglected and abused dogs.
