A sweet pup was picked up off the streets of Pune after his eyes got injured. His rescuer got him treated and with the right intention left him at a city dog shelter. However, he was conned into believing that Toby would be looked after. When he visited the pup six months later, he was shocked. To his horror, the dog was on the verge of dying. Toby had been crammed into a tiny cage – he was covered in his own feces, barely got food or water, and his hind legs were paralysed due to lack of movement. But Toby’s WILLPOWER helped him overcome his odds.
Once the rescuer had brought Toby back out, he approached VOSD Pune for help. We suggested they admit him to the Karma Foundation hospital. The doctors were shocked that Toby was still alive! He had a severe head ache due to purification of his eyes. He was several kilos underweight, and wasn’t able to walk or stand properly due to muscle degeneration. After a week of being on a high protein diet the kid finally underwent eye enucleation surgery. Since he needed therapy to stabilise physically & emotionally, Toby was shifted to VOSD Pune’s partner boarding centre. Thankfully he is showing signs of improvement – he can wobble around and play, especially with his dear friend Rani who also stays at the boarding centre.
Toby nearly lost his life after months of suffering but it could have been avoided. We appeal to all rescuers or dog lovers to keep this in mind:
1. Do a thorough background check of who you’re giving a rescued dog to
2. Adopt the dog yourself if possible or give him/her to a person who can guarantee lifelong security, medical care, peace, comfort, and happiness
Note: If you come across a blind dog that is in dire need of help and a permanent, safe home please contact VOSD on info@vosd.in. We admit blind stray dogs without a surrender fee.
