In honor of Kavya, the Golden Retriever who sparked the VOSD mission, we’ve launched a dedicated program to provide priority rescue, specialized medical care, and lifelong sanctuary for Golden Retrievers in need.
Kavya (meaning poetry) was the first-ever dog that Rakesh Shukla touched. She was a 2-month-old Golden Retriever pup born in a litter at his colleague’s home in 2009. Rakesh had debated getting a dog for over 30 years, but never actually had one. Bringing Kavya home and watching her first day away from her mother was a life-changing experience for Rakesh. It brought with it the profound knowledge that she would never be able to articulate her needs, hunger, pain, or any distress. The realization that from now on, he was her father and mother for life.
This responsibility was something he took so seriously that for the next 14 years that she lived, he never left the city of Bangalore, and throughout her entire life, she spent only 11 days without him. Kavya & Rakesh were inseparable, accompanying each other through a series of personal and professional highs and very low lows. This deep bond fueled Rakesh’s dedication, transforming his life’s trajectory, leading to profound sacrifices and achievements, a journey often highlighted in platforms like his TEDxICTMumbai talk on “Success, Wisdom and Dogs” and reflections on “Building a Life with Purpose”. Just two months after Kavya came into his life, while walking her, he chanced upon a famished, sick dog on the street. He called him Lucky and brought Lucky home as well. That serendipitous encounter started a journey that is today …
The VOSD Advance VetCare services are delivered by VOSD Pet & Vet Corporation Pvt Ltd. Crucially, the VOSD Trust owns the VOSD Corporation, meaning all income generated is solely for the use of the VOSD Trust. Each service you utilize powers India’s largest dog rescue and caregiving system, which has rescued over 30,000 dogs in 40 cities across India, runs the world’s largest no-kill sanctuary for dogs in Bangalore with 1800 dogs in a sprawling, purpose-built 7-acre custom-built facility, and operates the largest referral hospital for dogs in India that supports and treats dogs throughout their lifetime, even those other vets have given up on.
While VOSD has over 10 categories under which dogs are surrendered for lifelong care from across India, in honor and memory of Kavya Shukla, Golden Retrievers will now be a distinct surrender category. This fund provides specialized and fast-tracked support unique to Golden Retrievers.
Once a Golden Retriever’s case is approved by the VOSD Helpdesk system, VOSD will pay for the treatment of the dog, not only for its surrender. The rescuer will not have to pay any fees to VOSD or the veterinary facility (which will be paid for by VOSD).
If the Golden Retriever is found sick, injured, or in a life-critical condition, the VOSD Helpdesk can be contacted under this program. The VOSD Helpdesk will direct the dog to a designated vet hospital. At this point, the dog will be surrendered to VOSD. ONLY if the rescuer agrees to these terms will the dog be taken into the Kavya Shukla-funded program; otherwise, the dog will continue to be the rescuer’s liability.
Under this program, VOSD will pay for the treatment and recovery of the Golden Retriever at the designated medical facility. Under NO circumstances will VOSD entertain payment requests for or be liable for the treatment of any Golden Retriever that does not have prior approval from VOSD. VOSD will strictly be liable for an approved line of treatment and at an approved veterinary facility if and only if the rescuer signs up the Golden Retriever at the beginning of the process.
Further, the surrender process will be fast-tracked – unlike other categories, dogs will not be required to have fitness certificates, blood tests, or vaccination records. All of this will be done by VOSD with a purpose-built quarantine and treatment facility for Golden Retrievers.
From the point of admitting the dog to the designated facility through eventual recovery, discharge, and admission to the VOSD Sanctuary, the rescuer would have forfeited all right to reconnect with the dog under the VOSD Standard Surrender Policy.
If you’ve found a Golden Retriever that is abandoned, critically ill, or in need of immediate medical attention, our Fastrack process ensures they get the help they need as quickly as possible. The process is straightforward, transparent, and designed for rapid intervention. Here is how you can be the crucial first step in their journey to safety.
For dogs within Bangalore, we can provide immediate medical admission.
For dogs outside Bangalore, the medical admission step is not applicable, but we can still provide lifelong sanctuary.
While Kavya’s personal story is one of profound love, her legacy extends far beyond. Her presence in Rakesh’s life laid the groundwork for VOSD’s core philosophy and its unparalleled commitment to animal welfare. This section highlights how Kavya’s spirit transformed into the institutional values and vast capabilities that define VOSD today.
Kavya’s influence led to the transformation of barren land into a lush, 3.5-acre sanctuary, a true haven for dogs.
Her spirit instilled the unwavering “no-kill” ethos, ensuring every dog receives lifelong care, regardless of condition.
From one dog, a global movement grew, providing sophisticated treatments to thousands and housing over 1000 resident dogs.
Golden Retrievers are one of the world’s most beloved breeds, but their popularity comes with a hidden cost. A unique combination of behavioral traits and severe health predispositions leads to alarmingly high rates of abandonment and surrender. This section explores the data-driven reasons why a specialized rescue program is not just a preference, but a necessity.
Impulsive ownership is common, with many unprepared for a Golden’s needs. When life changes – a new job, a baby, a move, these dogs are often the first to be left behind.
⚡ High Energy & Separation Anxiety: Their boisterous nature and deep bond with owners can lead to destructive behavior if not properly managed, often overwhelming unprepared families.
💰 Financial Strain: The high cost of food, training, and especially veterinary care for their common ailments is a primary driver of surrender.
🏡 Housing Issues: Relocation to smaller homes or non-pet-friendly housing is a frequent reason for abandonment.
Golden Retrievers are genetically predisposed to some of the most severe and costly health conditions in the canine world. For many owners, the financial and emotional toll is simply too much to bear.
💔 Cancer: The #1 cause of death, affecting a staggering 60% of the breed. Aggressive cancers like Hemangiosarcoma require expensive, often heartbreaking, treatments.
🦴 Hip & Elbow Dysplasia: This painful, chronic condition severely impairs mobility and requires costly surgeries or lifelong pain management.
❤️ Heart & Eye Conditions: Genetic issues like Subaortic Stenosis and progressive blindness add further layers of complex, expensive care.
This debilitating orthopedic condition is frequently observed in Golden Retrievers, often leading to chronic pain and mobility issues requiring extensive care.
Why is VOSD uniquely positioned to make this Golden Promise? Because we have built one of the world’s most advanced dog rescue infrastructures. We don’t just rescue dogs; we provide a comprehensive, lifelong ecosystem of care that even the most dedicated pet owners would find difficult to replicate. This is where Goldens in crisis find their safe harbor.
