Tiger Tiger Burning Bright

When he was a couple of months old, Tiger, an Indian stray dog, found himself at the meat market in Bangalore looking for scraps. A butcher picked him up and mercilessly chopped his tail off with a cleaver and left him to die. He survived but refused to approach a person or be touched. Some kind ladies found the mutilated pup and rushed to get him the care he needed, but despite being treated and shown what love could be, he was still very reserved.

VOSD’s doors are open to any dog that doesn’t have a home or hope, so during this incident in 2013, Tiger’s rescuers brought him to be left at our sanctuary. Our founder, Rakesh Shukla, knew that the little puppy wouldn’t survive on the street, so he agreed to admit him. “He doesn’t let men touch him, he doesn’t trust anyone easily for that matter,” they told him. But that’s only because he hadn’t met his papa yet.

Baby Steps Into a Better Future

Rakesh decided to take Tiger out for a walk and meet some of the other dogs he had — two German Shepherds named Dinanath and Chauhan. The nervous kid slowly began coming out of his shell and was a changed pup after the hour-long walk! To date, Tiger remains papa’s boy and loves seeking his attention and love.

Over time, as he socialised with other humans and dogs at VOSD, he began to see that he could trust people again and that no one would ever harm him. So he gradually opened up and is a lovable lad to all today. That’s the magic of our sanctuary!

Supporting Dogs at VOSD

While we provide the best comfort, food, treatment, exercise and facilities that our hospital-cum-sanctuary can offer to the dogs, your contributions go a long way in ensuring that not only the future of these dogs are safe, but also that the funds are freed for the constant expansion we experience. Remember, we have gone from 0 to 850+ dogs in 6 years and our journey doesn’t end here!

Our four-acre space on the outskirts of Bangalore can accommodate more dogs that don’t have a home or hope, and the people required to care for them. We recently constructed a hospital, houses for animal caregivers, veterinarians, and volunteers, and three water tanks that can hold up to 16.5 lakh litres. The setup is complete with a rainwater harvesting system as well, which will ensure that the dogs have an uninterrupted supply year-round. So please join hands with us to help Tiger and his friends live a comfortable life at VOSD!
