Another Police Officer Retires at VOSD

Anand, a dashing 12-year-old Doberman, has come home to the VOSD Sanctuary. He has retired from the RFP Dog Squad after giving them the best years of his life. He is old and ailing now and hence was surrendered to VOSD. We are so proud of Anand. He has an excellent life ahead of him at the VOSD Sanctuary, where he will get the latest & best medical treatment available in India today and will be thoroughly pampered by his papa, Rakesh Shukla. Send him your love and good wishes for a happy life ahead!

About #PatriotDogs

Thousands of dogs serve our country as part of the Indian Army, the Police, the Railway Police Force, CISF, etc. About 1200 serve in just the Army. At VOSD, we call them #PatriotDogs. With VOSD’s deep experience of over 250,000+ treatments,8,000+ rescues, and 850+ permanent dogs, and world-class medical and technological support, we have been keeping #PatriotDogs discharged by the Karnataka, Kerala, and Railway Police Forces, among others.

#PatriotDogs are trained in various specialties like explosive detection, tracking down insurgents or terrorists, and mounting massive search-and-rescues. From the tender age of just two months, they serve our country through the prime of their lives – usually 8-10 years. It’s a sad fact that till recently, they were euthanised at the end of their service.

At the end of 2015, the courts put a stop to this tragic practice, but the concern remains the same. Where will these #PatriotDogs go when they can no longer serve?

They are not cute and cuddly and ready for adoption. Most are senior dogs, and they carry the weight of their jobs — most are arthritic, many have other illnesses as well. Some are younger but have been discharged from service due to medical reasons. From being working dogs, on duty every day, their lives suddenly change, and they are confined to a kennel, away from their handlers. Neither can their handlers adopt them, as there is no pension or allowance to care for these #PatriotDogs. Many get dumped in shelters where no one cares about their well-being.

At VOSD, we have approached – and in turn, been approached by – several organisations to provide a home for their retired #PatriotDogs. In the past few years, we have added dogs from the Kerala Police, the Karnataka Police, the Railway Police Force, and the Indian Army. We believe it’s time to do something for our #PatriotDogs, who have given us the best of their lives.

To help us bring many more #PatriotDogs home to VOSD Sanctuary, please make a small donation today: www.vosd.in/donate

Your contribution goes a long way in ensuring not only the future of this dog, but also that funds are freed for the constant expansion we experience. Remember, we have gone from 0 to 850 + dogs in 6 yrs!

It costs an average of ₹1,900 for the upkeep of a dog, including food, shelter, vaccination, and regular medical care for each of the 850+ dogs in our care. If you choose QTY = 1, you are sponsoring 1 month for this dog. QTY = 2 indicates 2 months. There is a total of 12 months available to be sponsored.

All contributions get an 80G deduction. You are contributing towards one of more than 850+ dogs in our permanent care. It costs in excess of Rs 15-16 lacs per month to maintain this infrastructure and the rescue, and we raise not more than 10% of that through contributions at the moment. Your help in sponsoring this dog goes a long way in supporting VOSD and helping make India’s largest rescue even better. Write to info@vosd.in for your 80 G receipts.
