VOSD’s founder, a tech entrepreneur, started as a dog feeder in 2010.
VOSD scaled rescue dogs across Bangalore, and then scaled to India’s only nationwide secondary rescue and the home of dogs with no home and no hope, with over 30,000 rescues nationwide and 1,800 dogs in our permanent care. In doing so, we have developed processes and logistics to support community dogs and their support systems. 50% of the dogs at the VOSD Sanctuary & Hospital are from outside Bangalore, and VOSD feeds dogs in Bangalore and Pune as of today through the VOSD StreetCare™ Feeding Program.
VOSD StreetCare™ Feeding Program
Feeding a dog should be an act of kindness, but for many, it has become a struggle against fear and logistics, especially in the backdrop of the recent Supreme Court orders about stray dogs and feeding. These have created confusion, leaving feeders vulnerable to illegal demands from local authorities. Compassionate citizens are often harassed or bullied by RWAs and neighbours for their commitment to strays. Finding hygienic, consistent, and affordable food sources is a daily hurdle for independent rescuers.
VOSD StreetCare™ Feeding Program is highly organised.
Legally-Supported. Hyper-Transparent.
VOSD turns your individual compassion into a movement. VOSD StreetCare™ Feeding Program addresses the core challenges of harassment, food credibility, and lack of funds by providing a systematic “Shield and Sustenance” model.
Verified Credibility: Every meal is prepared hygienically and sourced from verified vendors. We remove the worry about food quality so you can focus on the care.
Legal Advocacy: VOSD is the only litigant in the Supreme Court from outside New Delhi fighting for the right to protect dogs and the community’s right to their welfare, including feeding and “sterilise-vaccinate-release” mandate. VOSD was allowed to be impleaded in the case because of our unique experience data and analysis, including: ABC Analysis (Animal Birth Control programme realities and failures), Urban food waste patterns and their relationship to dog population stability, Shelter mortality and welfare data across India, and many other data sets
VOSD during Covid Lockdown
VOSD has supported dogs throughout India during the Covid national lockdown. VOSD was supporting the daily feeding of 10,000 dogs across 20 locations throughout India through cash grants to feeders! You can read more here.
How does the VOSD StreetCare™ Feeding Program work?
The VOSD StreetCare™ Feeding rests on a few fundamentals:
How VOSD chooses the dogs & feeders: VOSD StreetCare™ Feeding is built on ground-level verification to ensure every rupee donated reaches a dog in need. First, VOSD chooses VOSD Ambassadors, who are trusted on-the-ground individuals with a long history of working with dogs and an ecosystem they know well. They, in turn, identify genuine rescuers and feeders in their communities based on a VOSD checklist that includes the number of dogs, the location’s safety, and the feeder’s credibility, etc. VOSD then signs up the feeders.
How VOSD actually feeds the dogs: Once verified, VOSD sponsors the feeder’s feeding program. This includes providing funds and access to a reliable supply chain for hygienic food. The food manufacturers and suppliers are all paid directly by VOSD. VOSD Ambassadors keep a weekly record of the amount of food paid for by VOSD, the actual food delivered to the feeders, and the actual number of dogs fed (photographic evidence has to be maintained of the dogs).
Who supports VOSD StreetCare™ Feeding: Other than thousands of individual supporters, VOSD is supported by Adobe, Salesforce, Narayan Murthy Foundation, Infosys Foundation and many other organisations. As a matter of policy and the VOSD charter, VOSD does not accept financial or in-kind donations from any Central or State Funded animal welfare agencies.
VOSD StreetCare™ Feeding: part of a virtuous cycle
Feeding is just the beginning. When you support VOSD, you are supporting a cycle that cares for a dog at every stage of its life, and this is expanding.
Stage 1: Survival: The Feeding Program provides the baseline of health.
Stage 2: Health: Access to the VOSD Advance PetCare Facility for medical emergencies and specialised care
Stage 3: Sustainability: Admittance to VOSD Sanctuary & Hospital for rescue, rehabilitation & lifelong care.
