Mama’s journey to VOSD began with a gruesome sight in Farrukhabad, UP: she had been run over by a train, severing three of her legs. Photos surfaced of her lying by the tracks in a pool of blood, when her 6 pups were still trying to suckle her. The pain and blood loss could have made her go into shock, and she would have died. Or she could survive for a few hours and die of blood loss. Or she could die of the infections in the exposed wounds. They could be eaten alive by maggots till they reach her abdomen and eat her alive. There are many choices Indian stray dogs have, to die neglected and without any help. There are a few options for real action to save their lives. This is the kind of dog VOSD is made for.
VOSD found the person who had taken the dog’s pictures. Her wounds were covered in caked blood and mud in the garage area of the house. The gentleman who had brought the dog in was a doctor. We immediately gave him detailed instructions on what he needed to do to wash the dog, keep it on a clean surface, inject it with human drugs to stabilise her, and prevent infections and blood loss. It was a race against time. VOSD then drove her in a cab to CGS Gurgaon, where a vet team was waiting for her, already updated with her information. Mama arrived late at night and went straight to intensive care for days. Meanwhile, VOSD had sent an ambulance to pick her up once she was stable. A week later, Mama and her pups had reached VOSD Bangalore.
The battle then moved to the operating table & rehab. It took several operations on 3 legs and days of care to save her – and to ensure that the legs are operated in a way that gives her a quality of life. The post op care and physio took months, in which the tissue grew enough over the stumps of grounded femurs for her to be able to set her weight on them.
When Mama healed, she learnt to walk on her one good leg and the stump of the diagonal leg. She is the bravest, most loving dog we have. She has a full life – eats well, bosses over other dogs, and walks around a 2000 sq. foot yard, sleeps in a warm bed. That is the magic of VOSD. This is not only his story but also demonstrates the VOSD Level of Care™ that allows 1,800 dogs, all of whom faced certain death without VOSD, to live their best lives at the largest no-kill facility in the world, with India’s largest referral hospital for dogs, and India’s largest single team of dog caregivers.
