On a busy highway in Pune, the cries of a dog in pain could be heard. A few locals informed Sinhgad Animal Welfare Charitable Trust, who arrived to rescue the poor pooch. Apparently, a speeding car had hit him but they weren’t sure of the extent of injury. So he was taken to a vet, who confirmed that the spine had broken – causing permanent paralysis waist-down. He could never walk again.

The NGO did their best to provide him treatment and some relief but they knew Shankar couldn’t be released back on the streets. People don’t adopt such paralysed dogs either, so he was left with no hope. The only facility in India that readily accepts special needs dogs is the VOSD Sanctuary & Hospital. Shankar was driven from Pune to our campus in Bengaluru for lifelong care.

At first, the terrified boy was apprehensive of letting us pet him but a few treats and kind words did the job! He then allowed us to trim his matted fur, clean his wounds, and give him anti-tick and flea treatment. Over the next few days he really perked up and began socializing with the other dogs in our hospital – they now sleep, eat, play, and run behind humans for treats together!

VOSD ensures that all special needs dogs like Shankar get individual attention and customised treatment plans. It isn’t sufficient to just admit dogs; our excellence lies in the lifelong care we provide for their good health. Please help us save more such vulnerable pooches who need our help by donating INR 5,000 (~$63) one-time or monthly for their food and medical expenses: https://vosd.in/active-campaigns/monthly-expenses/
