Lifeless and suffering stray pup finds a home and lifelong care at VOSD

On the night of July 11, 2022, four-month old Gangubai lay very still almost lifeless on the road. A rescuer noticed the little pup’s frail form while driving down that lane. He immediately stopped his vehicle and went up to her; a mild shiver confirmed the baby was still alive. She was unconscious, covered in her own faeces and barely breathing. After some deliberation, the rescuer got her admitted to a pet clinic around 9:30 pm.

Gangubai was severely dehydrated with dangerously low haemoglobin levels and a very high WBC count. Her X-ray reports showed a broken hind limb which possibly cracked upon impact from a moving vehicle. A couple of days later, a RT-PCR test revealed she had contracted the canine coronavirus infection as well. After a 10-day course of antibiotics, anti-diarrhoea and other supportive medicines, the pup made a decent recovery. Regular physio-therapy sessions also helped improve her spine and leg condition .

But the lone sickly pup would not survive on the street anymore. Her rescuer approached VOSD with a surrender request and soon, Gangubai came to us under the ‘Special Needs Dog’ category. The sweet little dog has won over everyone at the sanctuary. Her best friend is Archie and she likes to hang with Lion, a dog thrice her size! She is getting regular physiotherapy, has a healthy appetite and is well on her way to living a healthy, full and fulfilling life.

Gangubai got another chance at life because of a kind person’s decision to stop and help a vulnerable pup, who would have otherwise died alone in the dead of the night. Hundreds of special needs dogs are still suffering on the streets, waiting to be rescued. Help us bring them to the safety of VOSD by donating INR 5,000 (~$63) for their upkeep and medical care: https://vosd.in/active-campaigns/monthly-expenses/

If you know of any stray dogs with special needs who are unable to survive on the streets, you can surrender them to the VOSD Sanctuary & Hospital. For more information you can write to us at info@vosd.in
