In response to a Supreme Court directive on managing stray dogs, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has vaccinated 46,122 stray dogs against rabies in just one month. In addition, more than 12,000 dogs have been microchipped and geo-mapped to help authorities track their sterilisation and vaccination status. A pet registration drive has also been launched, with over 13,000 dogs formally registered so far. These measures support the Supreme Court’s humane approach: ensuring stray dogs are not culled but are vaccinated, sterilised, and managed responsibly. GCC officials say this will improve public safety and help build peaceful coexistence between people and stray animals.
