Delhi’s forced relocation of stray dogs is the main cause behind rising bite cases, says animal rights advocate Maneka Gandhi. Wealthy RWAs pay to remove dogs from their streets, and the MCD dumps them into poorer colonies, creating overcrowding and aggression. “99% of bites happen due to relocation,” she explains, adding that both dogs and residents are left stressed. Violence against feeders has also increased, with cases of beatings and even dog killings. Despite Supreme Court orders mandating designated feeding zones, the MCD has failed to act, leaving conflicts to escalate. Gandhi blames crumbling ABC centres run like money-making ventures for worsening the crisis. She calls for an immediate halt to relocation, proper sterilisation, and urgent enforcement of court directives.
