English, Hindi, or Tamil… Your dog doesn’t need words, just the right pitch.

Turns out, man’s best friend doesn’t just listen to words, they hear our tone. A new study from Eötvös Loránd University, Hungary, shows that dogs can instinctively recognize sounds that mean “yes” or “no.” Researchers tested pet owners who could only use a single syllable sound, varying pitch, volume, and length, to guide their dogs. The results? Dogs consistently picked up on low-pitched, gruff tones as “stop” and high-pitched, melodic, short bursts as “yes, keep going.” This instinct isn’t learned but likely hardwired into mammals and even birds, say scientists. So next time your dog ignores the dictionary, remember, it’s not the word that matters, it’s the music in your voice.
