MASS STERILISATION MILESTONE: 10,000 STRAYS TREATED
Erode Corporation has sterilised, vaccinated and released 10,403 stray dogs under its ongoing Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme, with the third phase targeting another 5,000 dogs. Launched in January 2024 in partnership with NGO Animal Helping Hands, the initiative operates from the Solar ABC centre, equipped with two operation theatres, pre and post-operative wards and three transport vehicles. On average, 1,200 dogs are sterilised monthly, with the NGO receiving โน1,650 per dog for capture, sterilisation, vaccination and release. The first two phases, covering nearly 10,000 animals, cost over 1.65 crore. With a GPS-based survey estimating 27,000 stray dogs across 60 wards, the civic body aims to manage
the population humanely while ensuring public safety. Source: The Hindu
