What can citizens do to make Kochi safer for stray animals?

Kochi is witnessing a troubling increase in hostility towards stray animals, particularly dogs. Incidents such as poisoning, objections to public feeding, abandonment, and even shootings have been reported. In July, seven stray dogs were poisoned to death by residents of Willingdon Island, with one carcass dragged for a long distance. Despite filing complaints, animal rights activist Prasanna P claims that local authorities have taken no action. Similarly, in Panampilly Nagar, residents have faced threats and video recordings for feeding stray dogs in public spaces. Activists argue that the lack of designated feeding areas and enforcement of animal protection laws exacerbate the problem, leaving vulnerable animals at risk. They urge authorities to implement stronger protections and raise public awareness about humane treatment.
