Malnourished Stray Dog Recovery: Signs of Severe Weight Loss in Dogs

Letter from the Editor

Imagine a dog whose skin is stretched tight – the one with every rib showing, limping on a raw, infected leg, desperately sniffing through a pile of trash and sharp glass for even a tiny scrap of food. This is a daily reality for millions of India’s stray dogs who face starvation, injury, and disease alone. They live in a constant state of pain, hunger, and fear, with nobody to turn to.

VOSD serves over 13.5 Lakh meals every year to neglected, abused, and once-hopeless dogs across India. Our StreetCare™ Feeding Program acts as a systematic “Shield and Sustenance” model. We identify and verify genuine rescuers and feeders on the ground, sponsoring them to ensure a reliable supply of hygienic food reaches those who need it most.

By supporting this program, you aren’t just providing a meal; you are giving these dogs a baseline of health and a second chance at life.

Haider

Rescued Senior Dog Finds Safety and Hope

Thank you for your support to Haider’s care. Haider came to us back in 2014 from Chhattisgarh. He was only 4 months old and had lost his entire upper jaw in a horrific accident. Most people thought his case was hopeless, but we brought him to Bangalore and gave him a permanent home.

Today, at 11 years old, Haider is a sanctuary legend. He’s figured out his own way to eat and spends his days chasing sunbeams and lounging in the grass. Haider is safe, but there are so many others waiting for their turn. To keep supporting dogs with special needs and to bring more “hopeless” cases into the safety of the VOSD Sanctuary, we still need to reach our monthly funding goal.

Every bit you give goes directly toward the specialized medical care and lifelong home these special needs dogs deserve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is VOSD called a Sanctuary, not a Shelter?

VOSD provides a lifelong home with world-class care for dogs others won’t take, those with severe disabilities, health issues, or behavioral challenges. We don’t adopt out because, for these dogs, VOSD is home for life. This is why VOSD is not a shelter but a permanent home.

Why does VOSD not give updates on the dog I sent?

With over 1800 residents and 200+ new arrivals annually in VOSD Sanctuary & Hospital, our staff is fully committed to 24*7 medical care, feeding, and maintenance of the facility spread over several acres. We cannot pause these essential operations to track down individual status updates. Most dogs are also renamed based on their personalities or traits, making identification via your old descriptions or names virtually impossible.

What do you mean by no-kill? Why does VOSD not euthanise dogs?

VOSD doesn’t put down dogs for lack of space or funds. Any dog that comes to VOSD is guaranteed to have the best life, including amputees and those with organ failure receive the same high-quality care they’d receive in a home. Euthanasia is a rare last resort requiring three signatures; the VOSD Founder holds a veto power that has already saved dozens of dogs that top vets had given up on.
