VOSD Pune team focuses primarily on the spay and neuter of stray dogs in Pune city to reduce stray dog suffering, help control the spread of rabies, and help minimise human-animal conflict. During our spay/neuter work we often encounter sick or injured street dogs that require medical treatment, as well as old and disabled dogs that can no longer survive on the streets anymore.
We find street dogs suffering from diseases such as tick fever, distemper, tumours, gastroenteritis, heatstroke, kidney and liver failure, heart failure, skin diseases, ear infections, eye infections, parasitic infections, and numerous other bacterial and viral infections. We encounter street dogs with terrible traffic accident wounds, spinal injuries, paralysis, limb fractures, maggot infections, poisonings (either deliberate or accidental), beatings, and other injuries caused by human cruelty.
VOSD conducts a limited rescue service in Pune to provide aid to these desperate animals. Please support our work to rescue and rehabilitate street dogs in need by donating today.
SUFFERING FROM A TUMOUR
Stray dog Max was rescued with a TVT – a canine transmissible venereal tumour which street dogs contract through mating with another infected dog.
If left untreated, the tumour grows out of control and the dog dies a painful death.
Surgery is not recommended, but chemotherapy is very effective in this case and the prognosis for complete remission with chemotherapy is excellent! However the treatment and rehabilitation is costly…
Max is currently undergoing this treatment, and he is expected to make a full recovery, but he needs generous sponsors to fund the medicines and rehab that he needs.
PAINFUL KIDNEY STONES
Raja is a very old slum dog from Pune who has recently undergone treatment for kidney stones. This poor old dog was bleeding from his private parts and in excruciating pain when he was reported to us from the slum and rescued by VOSD. He is now receiving the treatment he needs and is slowly recovering from the kidney stones. However he is still very weak and anaemic and will need lengthy rehab.
FEVER AND WEIGHT LOSS
Neel is a very friendly street dog from Pune, who suddenly developed a fever, lost his appetite and rapidly began to shrink in size. Following veterinary attention and medication he is now recovering well.
LEG INJURY FROM ACCIDENT
Yogi is a stray dog from Pune who lives by the airport. He was spotted by one of the airport staff with a bleeding, injured leg and reported to VOSD Pune.
Yogi is known to us as we previously vaccinated and neutered him, and we also treated him before for a past accident that he got into. Yogi is an old dog and will probably need lengthy care before he can be released again. Please support Yogi’s treatment by making a small donation today!
OLD GIRL WITH CHRONIC HEART AND EYE PROBLEMS
Rani is a very old and gentle street dog who lived for many years in the compound of a factory in Pune. She was well taken care of by the factory staff and local volunteers. But Rani has chronic heart and eye problems and is too frail now to survive there. Rani has retired and now lives in a nice and spacious boarding facility in Pune where all her medical treatment is provided for. Every month we need generous supporters to fund Rani’s boarding fees and her essential heart medicines.
SWEET OLD STRAY WITH CANINE DEMENTIA
Bholu is a very old street dog from Pune. He started suffering from canine dementia and would wander in the road and then forget where he was, leaving him at very high risk of getting hit by traffic. We had to retire him from the streets to save his life, and now he is safe and happy in a spacious and nicely kept boarding facility in Pune where he is well looked after in his retirement. Due to his advanced age and other issues he cannot be moved all the way to VOSD sanctuary in Bangalore. But he can only stay safe there if he finds generous sponsors every month to sponsor his boarding fees.
AMPUTATION OF PRIVATE PARTS DUE TO TUMOUR
This friendly and affectionate boy is named Chai because he used to live near a chai stall in Pune, and greet all the customers there. We found him in distress in the monsoon suffering with swollen private parts, which turned out to be a tumour. He was treated but the tumour returned and the poor boy had to have his private parts completely amputated! Because of this there is no way that he would survive on the streets anymore, so we have given him a safe place to eat, sleep and live out his remaining days in a spacious and nicely kept boarding facility in Pune where his complicated medical issue will be looked after. Due to this he cannot be moved all the way to VOSD sanctuary in Bangalore.
CRUELTY SURVIVOR HAS LEARNED TO TRUST AGAIN
Ruby has been through a lot in his life. He is a cruelty survivor. His owner used to beat him with a cricket bat. We rescued him to save his life, and now he is safe and happy in a well managed and spacious boarding facility in Pune. He is no longer fearful of humans and has become affectionate. He is staying in Pune and not travelling to the VOSD sanctuary in Bangalore as he is happy and settled there and has learned to trust his caregivers.
BULLIED DOG TRUSTS HUMANS AGAIN
This doggo is a little sweetheart who lived near a slum. There he was bullied and harassed by various boys, which gave him a lot of fear and anxiety, causing him to chase bikes and try to bite people. As a result many people around wanted to harm or kill him. We had to take him off the streets to save his life, and now he is safe and happy in a well managed boarding facility in Pune. He is no longer stressed and is very affectionate to humans with no more biting. He is staying in Pune and not travelling to the VOSD sanctuary in Bangalore as he is happy and settled there and has learned to trust his caregivers.
STREET DOG WITH WOUND THAT WON’T HEAL
Jai is a street dog rescued from the streets of Pune with a huge maggot wound covering his neck and back. The wound was so deep it is taking several months to heal fully, and he is currently being rehabilitated in a spacious and well-managed boarding facility in Pune. He is becoming friendlier with his caregivers and is getting all the nutritious food and medical care that he needs but we suspect that his wound is not going to heal so he will stay with us for life.
STREET DOG WITH HUGE MAGGOT WOUND RESCUED
This dreamy old boy is an adorable veteran street dog from Pune and his grey muzzle shows you how old he must be. We first noticed him when we found him in great pain suffering on the street with a huge maggot wound, and we treated him for many weeks until he healed. But he’s far too old and frail to survive on the streets anymore, so we have given him a safe place to eat, sleep and live out his remaining days in a spacious and nicely kept boarding facility in Pune where he is well looked after in his retirement. Due to his advanced age and other issues cannot be moved all the way to VOSD sanctuary in Bangalore.
NEGLECTED SICK DOG RESTORED TO HEALTH
Chiku was an abandoned pet dog who was adopted by another family on the behest of their astrologer. It was believed that keeping a black dog would ward off bad times that the family was facing. So they kept Chiku with them for over 6 years. She was always kept outside the house and hardly fed or medicated properly. Over the years Chiku’s started getting epileptic fits and skin but she never got her proper treatment. She was a doormat kept to ward off evil eye – they didn’t care about her well being. Thankfully Chiku is safe and in good hands now. She gets regular vet care and lives in a well managed spacious boarding facility where she has caretakers to watch over her food and medical needs. This old, sweet dog only wants to be loved and cuddled.
Your donation will go towards alleviating the suffering of sick and injured stray dogs who have nowhere else to turn to.
