Sweety’s journey is a grim testament to the daily, targeted cruelty faced by street dogs. As an elderly community dog, she was singled out simply for existing and for being friendly. The first unimaginable act of hatred was against her pups: people deliberately poisoned her newborn pups and tossed their tiny, lifeless bodies into a gutter. This was not a random event; it was a deliberate, cold-blooded crime.
The cruelty did not stop there. Not long after, a person in the community shot her three times near her heart. Immensely in pain and soaked in a pool of blood, she struggled to hide until she was found and rushed to a clinic. With great effort and the help of a dedicated local NGO, doctors were able to remove the bullets. However, the injury caused her consistent, painful gastric issues, posing a constant risk. The brutality of the attack is permanently etched on her face, with a bullet mark visible between her eyes.
An FIR was filed, and the incident was captured on CCTV, yet even after years, no action was taken against her attacker, who walks free even today. When she returned to her spot after surgery, the threats to her life only escalated, with neighbours vowing to “shoot her brains out.” Fearing for her life, her caregiver—a dedicated housewife with no personal income was forced to move her to a private boarding facility. This offered a brief, safe haven, but the cost of ₹800 per day was impossible to sustain, especially after accumulating debts of over ₹70,000 for her initial hospital bills and legal fees.
With no other options and with the constant, terrifying threat of murder, the caregiver reached out to VOSD as a desperate, final resort. This was her last stop on a brutal, life-threatening journey. Sweety is a good dog; she is friendly, knows commands, and is full of life. But without a permanent, secure place like VOSD, this gentle dog wouldn’t have made her way from a death-trap in Rajasthan to the guaranteed, lifelong safety of The VOSD Sanctuary & Hospital.
