A senior stray dog was rescued from Sarjapur, Bengaluru. She was admitted to a veterinary hospital in the city, where it was discovered that the poor dog has cancerous tumors. The mass had already spread through her chest cavity and rib cage. Due to the complexity of the tumors and her age it was impossible to operate her . She wasn’t responding to medication either, and the open wound caused by the tumors wasn’t healing.

Leaving her back on the street wasn’t an option since no one was willing to look after the dog. Her rescuers tried convincing some shop owners in the vicinity to give her shelter & medicines but no one obliged. With no option left, the old dog was surrendered by her rescuer to VOSD for her end-of-life care. We admit dogs in such conditions which means that we will take on their life and their passing.

Our team is ensuring that ‘Sundari’ is comfortable, not in pain, is in a hygienic accommodation, gets nutritious food, and daily wound dressing. We’re spending quality time with her too because every dog deserves to feel loved and cared for. We can’t cure this poor girl of her ailment, but find solace in the fact that she is dearly loved at VOSD. Here at VOSD she is well-looked after rather than suffering, starving, or dying alone on the streets. When Sundari’s last day comes, we will be here right beside her; that is a part of the job of being a dog’s best friend. To be there with them when they pass away is the greatest gift you can give anybody.

The VOSD Hospice is India’s largest sanctuary for senior and ailing stray dogs. When they have no one to care for them or no place called home, we become their family – we become their only hope in the last chapter of their lives. Such dogs need expensive medical care so will you please help by donating INR 5,000 (~$63) one-time or monthly for their food & treatment expenses? https://vosd.in/active-campaigns/monthly-expenses/. Your generosity and kindness can allow us to save many more dying dogs and give them dignity and love in their last days.
