Preparing for inner-city travel with a dog

More and more, people are unwilling to holiday without their beloved dogs. This is great! Learn a thing or two from us to make travelling with your dog an absolute breeze.

Are you planning to travel with your dog? Why wouldn’t you? After all, you and your dog must be inseparable. However, in order to make such travel plans, there are a few tips that you should know. It is not the same as travelling with your friends, family, or children. It takes a little more than that including the various travel policies at play.

Firstly, once you have decided on the destination, you would have to consider the modes of transport.

By road:

Travelling by road sounds the most ideal. You can take your dog and drive to wherever you need to be. A few basic considerations would include a good pet carrier or at least a good way to ensure that your dog is not jostled around during the journey. Older dogs that are used to short distances by car will know what to do and will submit to such travel with great ease. Younger dogs may require the carrier and one that can be fastened to the seat firmly. Apart from this, all you will need to carry is the required documentation as to the identity and ownership of your dog. Make sure you carry plenty of water and make regular stops. Your dog needs to move around and take water and pee breaks as much as you do. Whatever the distance and wherever you stop, make sure that you do not leave your dog alone inside the vehicle for too long.

By train:

Taking your dog on the train is considered a cheaper way of travel. Train travel comes with certain policies for pets of all kinds. Of course, if you are travelling in the first-class coach, your dog can stay there with you. In this case, you will have to show some consideration for your fellow passengers and their convenience. Too many complaints and your dog may be moved to the luggage car by the train authorities. But, generally, pets are required to travel in the luggage carriage only. Again, you will need to carry the required documentation for your dog. The challenge you will face if your dog is travelling in the luggage car would be to ensure frequent checking in. Your dog’s food will be your total responsibility. You may need to make trips to the luggage car to feed your dog, too. Make sure that you have taken along your dog’s favourite toy so that it can remain with your dog through the train ride. You may also need to make sure that your dog is accustomed to travelling in a pet carrier as that is how staying in the luggage car will be safe and comfortable.

By air:

If you plan to take your dog on a flight, more attention needs to be paid to the travel policies of different airlines. Most of the airlines will come with rather strict policies with only a few minor variations. Generally, dogs will be required to travel as part of the freight. They will be allowed on the aircraft hold which is a safe and pressurized area of the aircraft. Some of the airlines may insist that your dog is at least 12 weeks old and others may restrict travelling with a dog to passengers with disabilities. However, if your dog is pregnant or her pups have not yet weaned off, they will not be allowed on flights. Some airlines also place restrictions on the breed and behaviour of your dog. Air India is known to allow pets in the cabin; but, most other airlines will insist that your dog travels in cargo. At best, you can insist that your dog travels with you on the same flight.

Whatever the mode of transport, travelling with your dog requires serious thought and preparation as to your dog’s utmost comfort. While there is great joy in travelling everywhere with your dog, your dog’s care and comfort must take precedence.
