Before bringing home a pet dog, it is mandatory that thorough research is carried out and all members of the home consent to raising them. It is a 10-12-year long commitment. Unfortunately, most families fail to consider the seriousness of the issue, inevitably affecting both them and the dogs.
Siblings Jem & Peeko underwent similar turmoil before being surrendered to VOSD for lifelong care. The two dogs were adopted by a family last year as pups but later, behavioural issues began surfacing. The siblings would get into brutal fights with each other, resulting in bleeding and injuries. The family sought help to train them – they got the dogs neutered too – alas it was of no avail. When left unattended, clashes would arise between the siblings. The family was unable to care for them any longer, so they admitted them to VOSD after following our surrender process. “I have come to the realisation that having dogs as pet is not for me. My kids do like them, but they are also not attached to them,” wrote their owner.
Jem and Peeko are extremely insecure, they snarl and snap at strangers, are afraid of leashes and other dogs, and so on. Our team has been working with them one step at a time to gain their trust and get them accustomed to life at our sanctuary. The journey is long and time-consuming, but we are optimistic they will grow into confident and happy dogs soon.
VOSD is home to hundreds of dogs with behavioural issues who are currently under rehabilitation.
