Eighteen years ago, Rani a stray dog puppy, along with her brother, were brought in by a company that was going to use the siblings for guarding purposes. Unfortunately, the brother died in due course but Rani lived on and became quite the favorite of company staff members. She was allowed to venture anywhere on company office premises and was pampered with treats and good care.
As the years rolled along, Rani developed a nagging cough that wouldn’t go away. The company officials contacted the VOSD Team in Pune who took her to the vet where it was revealed that she had an enlarged heart. Our volunteers gave her medication and supplements on the company premises for two years with the support of the company staff. But, after a while, she developed kidney issues as well and we figured she would do much better with constant attention and care. The company people did not have the knowledge to take care of Rani and were worried about her deteriorating health.
So we took over Rani’s care and moved her to a private boarding in Pune. Rani fit into her new environment really quickly; the senior dog became the matriarch of this new place. She was like a mother to several younger dogs, especially to Toby, a blind, cruelty-survivor dog, who really needed the love and attention.
Rani was happy and comfortable at the boarding but because of old age, her health continued to deteriorate. She developed a mouth tumour, the size of which did reduce with medication, but she was steadily losing muscle mass.
Rani started having trouble walking on September 23, her hind legs had become stiff. On the afternoon of September 26, Rani passed away peacefully in her sleep.
Rani was like a gentle, delicate flower and led her life with quiet dignity. She embodied a stillness and strength that was amazing.
The company folks took great care of Rani for which we will always be grateful. Rani was under the VOSD Pune team’s care at a private boarding for the last 4+ years and many kind people supported her monthly boarding fees and medical care costs. Their love and support for Rani will always remain etched in our hearts. Thank you all! And we’ll forever be indebted to the Universe for sending Rani to us because we spent some glorious years with her, the memories of which we will cherish till the end of our days.
