“When tomorrow starts without me, don’t think we’re far apart…
For every time you think of me I’m right there in your Heart.”
Around 6-7 years ago an old stray dog entered Viman Nagar, Pune, but no one seemed to know how she got there. She began living outside a gurudwara and would be fed and cared for by community dog feeders in the locality. She soon developed a chronic skin infection – it would be treated with oral medication but with the onset of monsoon, the infection would resurface. However, Gugu had learnt to cope with her condition and led a peaceful life on the streets.
Two years ago, one of the stray dog caretakers informed VOSD Pune that she wasn’t eating properly. Our team took her to a senior vet, who diagnosed that her teeth had begun rotting causing severe oral infection and painful ulcers. She was started on oral antibiotics, a gel for her ulcers, anti-bacterial mouthwashes, and so on. Since she needed special medical care and couldn’t survive on the streets anymore, she was moved to VOSD Pune’s boarding partner in the city. With the medication, her ulcers had healed and she was able to eat properly.
All was well until two weeks ago when Gugu stopped eating again. Blood tests and a vet visit confirmed that her kidneys were failing. She was put on IV treatment for five days but subsequent blood tests didn’t show much improvement. On August 30th 2022 she passed away in her sleep after drinking a final meal of soup. She didn’t suffer much, which was a relief for all her caretakers. Gugu will always be remembered for her friendly nature and love for people. We’re truly grateful to Danish Mahmood who sponsored her boarding and care for the last few years! She lived a great life and his blessings and love were a big part of her life.
