What you will learn

A senior stray dog was being cared for by a kind person who would feed the old boy and let him sleep in the porch. However, upon the person’s sudden demise, the house was sold and the dog was kicked out. He had suddenly lost his favourite human, a reliable source of food, and shelter. This left Brownie feeling helpless and miserable. For many days he would frequent the house hoping to find his late caretaker but he would be chased away by the neighbours.

Taking pity on him, a lady began feeding him but, she too was asked to stop. The dog-hating neighbours threatened to harm Brownie if she continued to indulge him. She was genuinely afraid of the dangers he could fac. She knew it was not a way for an old, traumatised dog to live. So she admitted him to VOSD. Our Hospice facility provides end-of-life care for senior stray dogs who don’t have a home or anyone to care for them. We admit these elderly pooches without any surrender fees.

Brownie was in a pathetic state when he reached us – dirty matted fur clung against his body. So we trimmed his coat and gave him a bath after which his handsome side emerged! He was left free within our sanctuary to find a place of his liking to settle down, and he has taken refuge in a guava orchard which is quite and cool during the day. At nights, he sneaks into the porch of our staff quarters probably because he is used to sleeping in the veranda of his late caretaker’s home.

Brownie will spend the rest of his days in the peace and comfort of the VOSD Sanctuary where no harm can befall him. He has been provided with everything that he was stripped of, be it shelter, food or affection. He is only one among the hundreds of such vulnerable aged stray dogs who have found refuge under our care.

The streets are a cruel place for aging and unwell dogs to survive on. The VOSD Hospice is their only chance at having a dignified life and peaceful passing when their time ends. We urge you to help us protect these babies by contributing INR 5,000 (~$65) one-time or monthly for their food & treatment expenses: https://vosd.in/active-campaigns/monthly-expenses/. Your support can enable us to provide a home for many other elderly stray dogs who are in desperate need of care.
